Don't Make Exercise Complicated

As a group fitness instructor I get asked lots of questions about exercise. Too often people try to make exercising more complicated than it need be. While we all need to incorporate some exercise into each day (YES, every day), it doesn't have to be something that uses specialized equipment or machines. You want to choose something you can actually make part of your daily routine for the rest of your life! Our bodies were made for movement. If we become couch potatoes, our body will become old much faster. Exercise can be as simple as taking a walk at lunchtime for 10 minutes. A big myth people often harbor is you must get your exercise in one continuous period of time. WRONG! Try doing some type of exercise in 10 minute lumps. If you do that several times during the day, before you know it you've accumulated 30 minutes of exercise. By doing that everyday, you increase your fitness level, burn extra calories, and exercise your heart and cardiovascular system. All that adds up to a longer healthier life. Give it a try. Dance up a storm for 10 minutes, ride a bike, jump rope, hula hoop, whatever strikes you as enjoyable movement of some kind (and stash the cellphone). |
